C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc.
C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc. is an American third-party logistics provider that operates one of the largest freight brokerage platforms in the world, connecting approximately 75,000 active customers with a network of 450,000 contract carriers and managing roughly 37 million shipments annually across truckload, less-than-truckload, ocean, air, and intermodal modes. The company generated $16.2 billion in total revenue in fiscal 2025, though its asset-light brokerage model means the economic top line is adjusted gross profit — the spread between what customers pay and what carriers receive — which was approximately $2.7 billion for the year.
This is a story about a legacy freight broker undergoing one of the more interesting self-inflicted transformations in industrial America. Under CEO Dave Bozeman, who arrived in mid-2023 from Ford Motor Company and Amazon, C.H. Robinson has imported lean manufacturing disciplines and an aggressive technology agenda into a historically relationship-driven business. The company calls it "Lean AI" — a deliberate fusion of its Robinson Operating Model (rooted in lean methodology), custom-built AI agents deployed across the quote-to-cash lifecycle of a load, and the domain expertise of its freight professionals. The early results are striking: 12 consecutive quarters of market share gains versus the Cass Freight Shipment Index, a more than 50% increase in shipments per person per day since the end of 2022, and operating margins that have expanded even as the freight market endured one of its longest recessions on record.
The file turns on a single question: whether the Lean AI model can compound earnings through a full freight cycle — generating what management calls higher highs and higher lows — or whether the recent outperformance owes more to a favorable spot-rate environment and aggressive cost-cutting that will mean-revert when the cycle turns.
