Fifth Third Bancorp
Fifth Third Bancorp is an American regional bank holding company that provides a broad range of financial services — commercial and consumer banking, wealth management, payments processing, and capital markets — to customers across the Midwestern and Southeastern United States, generating $9.0 billion in total revenue in fiscal 2025. Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, the bank traces its unusual name to the 1908 merger of the Third National Bank and the Fifth National Bank, and today operates 1,130 full-service banking centers across twelve states with $214 billion in assets. In February 2026, Fifth Third closed its acquisition of Dallas-based Comerica Incorporated in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $12.7 billion, creating a combined institution with roughly $297 billion in assets, 1,489 branches, and a footprint that now stretches from the Great Lakes to the Southwest.
The Fifth Third story entering mid-2026 is fundamentally an integration story with an organic growth kicker. The Comerica merger is the largest transaction in the bank's history, and its execution over the next twelve months will determine whether Fifth Third cements itself as one of the most profitable super-regional banks in the country or absorbs a multi-year distraction that leaves it where it started. What makes the file interesting is that the merger thesis does not require heroic assumptions: the $850 million in expense synergies are already tracking ahead of plan, customer retention is running above 99% on the commercial side, and the bank's existing Southeast branch-expansion playbook — which has doubled deposits in six years — is being exported to Texas with 150 planned de novo locations. The central question is whether the organic growth engine Fifth Third built over the past decade can be replicated in Comerica's markets before the credit cycle or the rate environment turns unfriendly.
