Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc.
Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (HII) is America's largest military shipbuilder, designing, constructing, and maintaining nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, submarines, amphibious assault ships, and surface combatants for the U.S. Navy, as well as providing defense technologies and unmanned systems through its Mission Technologies segment. The company generated $12.5 billion in GAAP revenue in fiscal 2025 and holds a $57.3 billion backlog — more than four years of revenue at current run rates.
This is a story about a durable industrial franchise anchored by the most capital-intensive and politically protected corner of the defense budget. HII is the sole builder of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, and one of only two builders of nuclear submarines and surface combatants. That concentration creates an almost unassailable competitive position — but also means the company's fortunes are almost entirely a function of Navy procurement decisions, execution on decades-long shipbuilding programs, and the success of an enormous workforce recruitment and retention effort. The file turns on whether the shipbuilding margin recovery underway since the 2024 trough has enough runway to re-rate a stock that the market prices as though the best of the cycle has already passed.
HII is not a compounder in the traditional sense. Revenue will track defense authorizations; margins will track program execution and labor availability. The investment case rests on the simple proposition that a business with visible demand stretching into the 2040s, improving throughput, and a disciplined capital return framework deserves more than a mid-cycle multiple — especially when the most recent quarter showed revenue up 11% and operating income up 29% from the prior year.
