Philip Morris International Inc.

From ReportWarehouse, the free investment-report repository

Philip Morris International Inc. is a leading international consumer goods company that sells cigarettes and smoke-free nicotine products — including heated tobacco units (under the IQOS brand), nicotine pouches (under ZYN), and e-vapor products (under VEEV) — in approximately 170 markets, generating $40.6 billion in GAAP net revenues in fiscal 2025. The company was spun off from Altria Group in 2008 and has since invested over $16 billion to develop, scientifically substantiate, and commercialize smoke-free alternatives to cigarettes, with the stated goal of completely ending the sale of cigarettes.

PMI is a transition story with unusual structure: an enormous combustible tobacco franchise — the number-one or number-two cigarette company in roughly 100 markets, anchored by Marlboro, the world's best-selling international cigarette — generates the cash that funds a fast-growing smoke-free portfolio whose unit economics are materially better. In 2025, smoke-free products accounted for 41.5% of net revenues and, management argues, an even larger share of gross profit given their structurally higher margins. The combustible business, meanwhile, still generates gross margins north of 65% and throws off more than $12 billion in annual operating cash flow. The file turns on whether the smoke-free flywheel can scale fast enough to offset the reality that the fuel source — cigarette profits — is in irreversible long-term decline.

The most recent quarter, reported on the day of this writing, sharpens the picture. PMI delivered 8% organic revenue growth in Q2 2026 and 11% organic operating income growth, beating expectations on both combustible volumes and smoke-free profitability. The company chose to maintain full-year guidance and redirect the over-earning into accelerated U.S. investment — in ZYN brand building, portfolio expansion, and preparation for the eventual U.S. launch of IQOS ILUMA. It is a characteristic PMI move: trade near-term earnings beats for long-term positioning in a category that could be multiples larger than today's.
