The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc.
The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. is a Pittsburgh-based bank holding company that runs retail banking, corporate and institutional banking, and an asset- and wealth-management business across a coast-to-coast American footprint, generating $23.1 billion of GAAP total revenue and $7.0 billion of net income in fiscal 2025. It is one of the largest diversified financial institutions in the United States, with $616.0 billion of assets and $449.8 billion of deposits at June 30, 2026, and 55,333 employees at the end of 2025.
This is a story about a super-regional that spent a decade converting crisis-era deal-making into something more organic. PNC absorbed National City out of the 2008 wreckage, bought BBVA USA's American franchise in 2021, and closed the acquisition of Colorado's FirstBank on January 5, 2026. The strategy since has been less about financial engineering than about using the scale those deals bought — a national commercial lending platform, a large branch network, and a deposit franchise — to grow customers faster than the industry. Fiscal 2025 was the proof point: revenue up 7%, diluted earnings per share up 21% to $16.59, and a fifth straight year of the company's self-described continuous-improvement savings. The first half of 2026 pushed further, with revenue up 17% and net interest margin at 2.96% in the second quarter.
The file turns on a single question: whether that growth is durable and cheap to fund, or whether PNC is simply growing a balance sheet at the point in the cycle when loan spreads are thinnest and credit is least forgiving. Management's 2026 guide calls for average loans up roughly 12.5% and net interest income up 15% to 15.5%, even as it concedes that the fastest-growing slice of new lending carries the lowest spreads. For a bank earning a mid-teens return on tangible common equity and trading at a modest multiple of tangible book, the answer to that question is most of the investment case.
