PPL Corporation

From ReportWarehouse, the free investment-report repository

PPL Corporation is an American utility holding company that delivers electricity to approximately 3.7 million customers across Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, and Rhode Island, and distributes natural gas in Kentucky and Rhode Island, generating $9.04 billion in revenue in fiscal 2025. Through its principal operating subsidiaries — PPL Electric Utilities, Louisville Gas and Electric (LG&E), Kentucky Utilities (KU), and Rhode Island Energy — the company owns and operates one of the more geographically diversified regulated utility franchises in the United States, with roughly $29 billion in rate base spread across three distinct regulatory jurisdictions.

This is a transformation story with an unusually clear before and after. In 2021 PPL sold its UK electricity distribution business (Western Power Distribution) to National Grid for approximately $10.5 billion, exited competitive generation, and repositioned itself as a pure-play US regulated utility. The proceeds funded the $3.8 billion acquisition of Narragansett Electric (now Rhode Island Energy) in 2022 and a cleanup of the balance sheet. What is left is three rate-regulated utilities serving states with constructive regulatory frameworks, a $23 billion capital investment plan through 2029, and one of the largest data center demand backlogs in the industry — 28.3 gigawatts of projects in advanced planning stages in Pennsylvania alone.

The file turns on a question that is equal parts regulatory, operational, and financial: whether PPL can convert unprecedented load growth into per-share value without sacrificing the balance-sheet discipline and affordability focus that have defined the post-transformation era.
