The Travelers Companies, Inc.
The Travelers Companies, Inc. is an American property and casualty insurer that underwrites commercial and personal insurance through a network of independent agents, generating $48.8 billion in total revenue and $6.3 billion in net income in fiscal 2025. Founded in 1853 in St. Paul, Minnesota, it is one of the oldest insurance organizations in the United States and a component of both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The company operates through three segments — Business Insurance, Bond & Specialty Insurance, and Personal Insurance — and held approximately 8.4 million active policies in the United States at year-end 2025.
This is a story about an insurance franchise operating at the top of its cycle. Travelers just posted a combined ratio of 89.9% in FY2025, its best in recent memory, followed by 86.1% in the first half of 2026 as catastrophe losses fell sharply from the prior-year period. Personal Insurance, which bled underwriting losses as recently as FY2023 with a 104.8% combined ratio, has been the largest swing factor — turning to 89.5% in FY2025 and 81.2% in H1 FY2026 on the back of aggressive rate increases and a stroke of luck with lower catastrophe frequency. Meanwhile, net investment income is climbing at a double-digit pace as a $101 billion portfolio rolls into higher-yielding securities, and the company is returning capital to shareholders at an aggressive clip — $3.0 billion in share repurchases in FY2025 alone, with another $3.1 billion in just the first half of 2026.
The file turns on a single question: how much of this performance is durable, and how much is the confluence of a hard commercial insurance market, a temporary lull in catastrophe frequency, and a tailwind from rising rates that will fade when any of those conditions reverse? At roughly 9.9 times trailing earnings and 7.4 times trailing EBITDA, the market is pricing something closer to normalization than continued excellence — a posture worth examining whether the business warrants.
